Directed-energy weapon facts for kids
A directed-energy weapon (often called a DEW) is a special kind of weapon that sends out very focused energy to damage a target from a distance. Instead of using bullets or explosives, these weapons use powerful beams of energy.

What Are Directed-Energy Weapons?
Directed-energy weapons work by aiming a strong beam of energy at something. This energy can heat up, melt, or even break apart the target. Think of it like using a magnifying glass to focus sunlight and burn a leaf, but on a much bigger and more powerful scale.
How Do They Work?
These weapons create a concentrated beam of energy. When this beam hits a target, it transfers a lot of energy very quickly. This can cause the target to heat up, vibrate, or even break down at a molecular level. The goal is to damage or destroy the target without needing physical contact.
Types of Directed-Energy Weapons
There are different kinds of directed-energy weapons, each using a different type of energy:
- Lasers: These weapons use very strong, focused beams of light. They can be used to blind sensors, damage vehicles, or even shoot down missiles.
- Microwaves: Similar to the microwaves in your kitchen oven, these weapons use electromagnetic waves. They can heat up targets or disrupt electronic systems. Some microwave weapons are designed to cause temporary pain to people without lasting harm.
- Particle Beams: These are more advanced and use tiny particles, like electrons or protons, accelerated to very high speeds. When these particles hit a target, they transfer a lot of energy, causing damage.
What Are They Used For?
Directed-energy weapons have many potential uses:
- Defense: They can be used to protect against incoming threats like missiles or drones. A laser could quickly burn through a missile's casing, making it fall apart.
- Targeting: They can disable or destroy vehicles, ships, or aircraft.
- Disabling Electronics: Some DEWs can send out energy that messes up electronic devices, making them stop working.
- Crowd Control: Some less-lethal versions, like sonic weapons, can create very loud sounds that make people move away without causing serious injury.
