Dishwasher salmon facts for kids
Dishwasher salmon is a unique American fish dish. It's cooked using the heat from a dishwasher, especially during its drying cycle. It might sound strange, but it's a real way to prepare a meal!
How to Make Dishwasher Salmon
Making dishwasher salmon is quite simple. First, you take pieces of fresh salmon. You can add your favorite spices to them, like salt, pepper, or herbs.
Next, you wrap the spiced salmon very tightly. You need at least two layers of aluminium foil to make sure no water gets in. This tight wrapping keeps the fish safe and helps it steam cook.
After wrapping, you place the foil-wrapped salmon inside your dishwasher. Then, you start a normal wash and dry cycle. The heat from the dishwasher, especially the hot water and drying phase, cooks the salmon.
Depending on your dishwasher model, the salmon will be cooked, steamed, and become tender. A cool thing about this method is that the prepared fish doesn't make your kitchen smell fishy! Plus, you can even wash your dirty dishes at the same time, as long as the salmon package is sealed tightly.
The History of Dishwasher Salmon
The idea of cooking fish in a dishwasher isn't brand new. The famous actor Vincent Price showed how to prepare fish this way back in 1975. He demonstrated it on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Price jokingly called it "a dish any fool can prepare," showing how easy it was.
Later, in 2002, the Canadian TV show The Surreal Gourmet, hosted by Bob Blumer, also featured this unusual cooking method.
Over the years, news about dishwasher salmon has appeared in many places. Major media outlets like The Wall Street Journal, NBC, BBC, Vogue, and CBS News have all reported on it. For example, CBS News interviewed Kym Douglas about her book The Black Book of Hollywood Diet Secrets, which included this unique recipe.
