The Story of Ditsch
How It All Began
The Ditsch story started way back in 1919. A talented baker named Wilhelm Ditsch opened his first bakery shop in Mainz, Germany. He loved making fresh, yummy baked goods for everyone.
A Family Tradition Continues
Wilhelm's son, Heinz Ditsch, followed in his father's footsteps. He became a master baker too! Heinz worked hard to make his father's pretzel recipe even better. Soon, Ditsch pretzels were famous far beyond Mainz. To keep up with the demand, "Pretzelmen" would walk around Mainz. They offered fresh pretzels from baskets in the streets and restaurants. In the mid-1970s, Heinz Ditsch decided to focus mainly on making his super popular pretzel pastries.
Growing into a Modern Business
Heinz's son, Peter Ditsch, grew up watching his family's business grow. He was a smart businessman. Peter noticed that more and more people wanted quick, easy food they could eat on the go. This is often called "fast food" or "outdoor consumption." He took over the company as the third generation of bakers.
Today, the Ditsch family business has over 400 employees. Its main office is still in Mainz, right next to where the first pretzels were made! In 1999, they built another big production site in Oranienbaum.
You can now find Ditsch shops in about 200 locations across Germany. Many are in places like railway stations, busy shopping centers, and pedestrian zones. These are areas where lots of people walk by.
