About Doctor Dolittle and the Green Canary
This book is part of the popular Doctor Dolittle series. These stories are about a kind doctor who learns to speak with animals. He then travels the world helping them. The books are known for their fun adventures and unique characters.
The Story Behind the Book
The author, Hugh Lofting, had actually written much of the material for this book a long time ago. It first appeared in a newspaper called the Herald Tribune Syndicate in 1924. Lofting wanted to turn it into a full book. However, he sadly passed away before he could finish it.
After Hugh Lofting's death, his wife's sister, Olga Michael, helped complete the story. She used Lofting's original notes and writings. Because of her work, the book was finally published in 1950. This means almost all of the book, except for the very first and last chapters, was written by Lofting himself.
What the Story Is About
Doctor Dolittle and the Green Canary tells more about one of the Doctor's animal friends. This friend is a lovely bird named Pippinella the Green Canary. The book shares her story in more detail.
Some parts of this book might seem familiar if you have read Doctor Dolittle's Caravan. That is because much of the material in Doctor Dolittle and the Green Canary was also used in the 1926 novel. This book gives a deeper look into Pippinella's life and adventures with Doctor Dolittle.
