Dogger is a much-loved picture book for children, both written and illustrated by the famous British author Shirley Hughes. It was first published in 1977 by The Bodley Head. This heartwarming story is about a little boy and his favorite stuffed dog, Dogger.
The Story of Dogger
The story of Dogger follows a young boy named Dave and his absolute favorite toy: a scruffy, well-loved stuffed dog named Dogger. One day, Dave loses Dogger, and he is very sad. The book beautifully shows how upsetting it can be for a child to lose something they love so much. Later, Dave's older sister, Bella, finds a way to help him get Dogger back.
Awards and Recognition
Shirley Hughes won a very special award for Dogger in 1977. This award was the Kate Greenaway Medal, given by the Library Association. It celebrates the best illustrations in a children's book by a British subject each year.
The "Greenaway of Greenaways"
In 2007, the Kate Greenaway Medal celebrated its 50th birthday! To mark this special occasion, a group of experts chose the top ten winning books from the past 50 years. These ten books were then put to a public vote to find the nation's favorite.
Dogger won this public vote and was named the all-time "Greenaway of Greenaways" on June 21, 2007. This means it was chosen as the most loved Kate Greenaway Medal winner ever! Dogger received 26% of the votes, just beating another popular book, Each Peach Pear Plum, which won the medal in 1978.
