Dogs Today magazine is a popular magazine all about dogs! It started in 1990 in the United Kingdom. This magazine shares stories, tips, and news for dog lovers everywhere. It also works hard to help make dogs' lives better.

The Story of Dogs Today

Starting the Magazine

The idea for Dogs Today magazine came from a newspaper owner named Lord Rothermere. He owned the Daily Mail newspaper and wanted to create a magazine just for dog fans.

A talented person named Beverley Cuddy became the first editor of Dogs Today. She knew a lot about dogs and magazines. Before this, she worked for the Kennel Club, which is a big organization for dogs. This was her first time being the main editor of a magazine.

A Big Change

At first, not everyone at the newspaper company believed in the magazine's idea. After spending a lot of money on TV ads, the company decided to close the magazine. They planned to let all the staff go.

But Beverley Cuddy truly believed in Dogs Today. She decided to buy the magazine herself! Lord Rothermere was surprised and impressed. He sold the magazine to her for just £1 (one pound). He also became a small investor to help her out. He later said he didn't think she would succeed where his big company had failed.

Amazing Success

However, just one year later, something amazing happened! Beverley Cuddy's new company, Pet Subjects Limited, won the Small Publisher of the Year Award at the PPA awards. This was a huge achievement!

Lord Rothermere was very happy for her. He even sent his chauffeur with champagne to celebrate her success. Dogs Today was also nominated for many other awards, including the 'best dog magazine in the world'.

Helping Dogs Everywhere

Dogs Today magazine has always been a champion for dogs. It has worked hard to make important changes for dog welfare.

For example, the magazine played a key role in changing the Dangerous Dogs Act. This law affects how certain dog breeds are treated. The magazine also helped ban tail docking, which is when a dog's tail is shortened. The government committee that looked into this issue even mentioned the magazine's work.

The magazine also works to improve the health of pedigree dogs. These are dogs with a known family history. Dogs Today has created a helpful list of all the hereditary health tests that should be done before breeding certain dogs. This helps make sure puppies are born healthy.
