Doi Tung Coffee is a special type of coffee bean. It's a kind of Coffea arabica, which is the most popular type of coffee in the world. This coffee grows in northern Thailand.

Since December 1, 2018, you can even find Doi Tung coffee on Japan Airlines flights! There are also plans to sell this coffee in the United States soon.

What Makes Doi Tung Coffee Special?

Doi Tung coffee is a mix of different coffee types. These include Catimor, Caturra, and Catuai. It grows in the Nang Non mountain range. This area is in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. The coffee plants grow high up, about 800 to 1,200 meters above sea level.

People describe Doi Tung coffee as having a "well-balanced taste." It has a sweet, fruity smell. It also has a nice, bright taste without being too sharp. The coffee beans are processed and roasted right where they are grown. This means they are not sent somewhere else to be prepared.

Protecting the Name

The Thai government gave Doi Tung coffee a special status in 2006. This is called a geographical indication. It means the coffee's quality is linked to where it comes from.

In May 2010, Thailand asked the European Union for a similar status. This was granted, making Doi Tung coffee a "Protected Geographic Indication" (PGI) in the EU. It was only the second Thai product to get this special protection. The first was 'Hom Mali' rice. This status helps protect the coffee's name and quality.
