The Doit W. McClellan Lustron House is a special historic home in Jackson, Alabama. It is made from enameled steel, which means it has steel panels with a shiny, protective coating. This house was built in a factory, making it a prefabricated home.
It was designed by the Lustron Corporation. This company made unique homes for a short time. The Doit W. McClellan Lustron House is one of only two Lustron homes in Jackson, Alabama. The other one, the J. P. McKee Lustron House, is very close by.
Lustron houses were only made for two years. About 2,495 were built, and around 2,000 of them still exist today. Many of these homes have been changed over the years. In Alabama, 20 Lustron houses were ordered, but it's not clear if all were built. By the year 2000, only eleven remained. Experts believe the two houses in Jackson might have been the first ones built in Alabama.
This house is part of a special group called the Lustron Houses in Alabama. This group is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Doit W. McClellan Lustron House was added to this list on February 24, 2000. It was recognized for its unique architectural significance, meaning it's important because of its design and how it was built.
History of the Lustron House
Both Lustron houses in Jackson were built in 1949. A local Lustron dealer named J. P. McKee, who owned McKee Construction Company, put them up.
People could visit both Lustron homes at an open house. This event started on April 16, 1949. By the year 2000, the outside of both houses still looked almost exactly like they did when they were new. At that time, both homes were being rented out.
What Makes it Special: Architecture
The Doit W. McClellan Lustron House is a specific type called the "Westchester" 2-bedroom model. It still has its original roof and wall panels, which are made of enameled steel. It also has a special "zig-zag" support column.
Lustron houses came in four different colors. The McClellan Lustron was originally "Dove Gray." However, its panels have since been painted over and are now white.
