Domangart mac Domnaill facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Domangart mac Domnaill (died 673) was a king in Dál Riata, an ancient kingdom in what is now western Scotland. He was the son of another king, Domnall Brecc. Historians are not entirely sure if Domangart was the main ruler of all Dál Riata or just the leader of a specific group called the Cenél nGabráin.

Who Was King Domangart?

Domangart mac Domnaill was an important figure in early Scottish history. He lived during a time when different groups, or clans, ruled their own parts of the land. His story helps us understand how these ancient kingdoms worked.

His Family and Kingdom

Domangart was part of a powerful family. His father, Domnall Brecc, was also a king. The Cenél nGabráin was one of the main royal families within Dál Riata. This kingdom was located in a beautiful area of western Scotland, with islands and highlands.

What We Know About Him

Even though Domangart lived a long time ago, we know about him from old records. He isn't mentioned in one famous old poem called the Duan Albanach. However, other important historical documents, like ancient family trees (called genealogies), do include him. These records connect him to later kings, such as William the Lion and Causantín mac Cuilén. These old family lists also tell us that Domangart was the father of Eochaid mac Domangairt.

His Time as King

The Annals of Ulster, which are like ancient news reports, mention Domangart. They record that in the year 673, "The killing of Domangart, son of Domnall Brecc, the king of Dál Riata" happened. This means his life as king ended in 673. During his time, some historical lists suggest that another group, the Cenél Comgaill, became separate from the Cenél nGabráin. This might mean they formed their own distinct territory or leadership.

Who Ruled After Him?

It's not completely clear who became king right after Domangart. This is because historical records from that period can be a bit confusing. If he was the main king of Dál Riata, his successor isn't immediately obvious. If he was just king of the Cenél nGabráin, that's also unclear. We do know of some kings who ruled later. These include Máel Dúin mac Conaill and Domnall Donn from the Cenél nGabráin. Also, Ferchar Fota of the Cenél Loairn is said to have ruled for a long time, about 21 years. His rule might have started around the time Domangart died.
