Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Domenico Fancelli (1469–1519) was a talented Italian sculptor. He spent most of his career in Spain. There, he helped bring the exciting new style of Renaissance art to the country. He is famous for creating beautiful tombs. His most well-known works include the tomb of Cardinal Diego Hurtado de Mendoza in the Cathedral of Seville. He also sculpted the tombs of the Catholic Monarchs, Queen Isabella I and King Ferdinand II, in the Royal Chapel of Granada.

Early Life and First Big Project

Domenico Fancelli was born in a town called Settignano, close to Florence, Italy. We don't know much about how he learned to sculpt. However, it seems he studied art in Florence and Rome.

His first major project came from Íñigo López de Mendoza y Quiñones, who was a count. The count asked Fancelli to create a tomb for his brother, Cardinal Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. The cardinal had passed away in 1502. Fancelli created this tomb in Genoa, Italy. Later, the tomb was moved all the way to Seville, Spain. Fancelli even helped to set it up inside the Cathedral of Seville.

Famous Tombs in Spain

Around 1510, Fancelli received another important job. He was asked to design and sculpt the tomb for John, Prince of Asturias. Prince John was the son of the Catholic Monarchs. He had died young, at just 19 years old, in 1497. This tomb was placed in the Royal Monastery of Santo Tomás in Ávila.

Fancelli's work on Prince John's tomb was a big success. Because of this, he got to work on what might be his most famous project. This was the tomb for the Catholic Monarchs themselves. He completed this amazing work in 1517. You can find it in the Royal Chapel of Granada, which is part of the Cathedral of Granada.

Fancelli was also asked to create tombs for Joanna and Philip I of Castile. But sadly, he passed away in 1519 before he could start this project. Another sculptor named Bartolomé Ordóñez took over the work.

His Influence

Domenico Fancelli had a great impact on sculpture in Spain. Other artists, like Vasco de la Zarza, were inspired by his style. He helped to change Spanish art by bringing in the new ideas of the Renaissance.
