Domenico Fiasella's Life and Art
Early Life and Training
Domenico Fiasella was born in Sarzana. His father, Giovanni Fiasella, was a silversmith. When Domenico was just 11 years old, his father noticed his artistic talent. He arranged for Domenico to train with a painter named Aurelio Lomi in Genoa. Later, Domenico also studied with another artist, Giovanni Battista Paggi.
Time in Rome
Around 1607, Domenico moved to Rome. There, he attended the Accademia del Nudo, an art academy where artists studied the human body. Famous painters like Guido Reni recognized his skills. This led other important artists, such as Domenico Passignano and Cavalier D'Arpino, to hire him.
A wealthy patron named Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani asked Fiasella to create several paintings. These included Christ Healing the Blind and Christ Raising the Son of the Widow of Nain. These artworks are now part of the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art collection in the United States.
While in Rome, Fiasella also painted The Flight into Egypt. This painting shows the Holy Family's journey to Egypt. It was given as a gift to Pope Paul V, who liked it very much.
Return to Genoa
By 1616, Domenico Fiasella had returned to Genoa. He opened a very busy art studio there. He created many artworks, including large wall paintings (frescoes) for the Palazzo Lamellini alla Zecca. These frescoes told the Story of Esther.
Fiasella was also a great teacher. Many young artists learned from him. Some of his notable students included Gregorio De Ferrari, Valerio Castelli, and Giovanni Andrea Podestà. He sometimes worked with Giacomo Legi, a painter from Flanders who also lived in Genoa. Domenico Fiasella died in Genoa.
