Domenico Gargiulo (born around 1609-1610, died around 1675) was an Italian painter. He was also known as Micco Spadaro. He lived during the Baroque period, which was a time of grand and dramatic art.

Domenico Gargiulo mostly worked in Naples, Italy. He was famous for painting different types of scenes. These included landscapes (pictures of nature), genre scenes (pictures of everyday life), and history paintings (pictures showing important events).

About Domenico Gargiulo

Domenico Gargiulo was the son of a sword maker. This is how he got his nickname, 'Micco Spadaro'. 'Spadaro' means 'sword maker' in Italian. He learned to paint in the workshop of Aniello Falcone. Falcone was a painter known for battle scenes.

While learning, Domenico worked alongside other famous artists. These included Andrea di Leone and Salvator Rosa. He also worked with Viviano Codazzi. Codazzi painted buildings and city views. Domenico would often add people to Codazzi's architectural paintings.

His Artistic Style

Domenico Gargiulo's early paintings were inspired by Paul Bril. Bril was a painter whose landscape frescoes (wall paintings) were in Naples. Domenico also learned from the style of Filippo Napoletano.

Domenico had his own students, too. Two of them were Pietro Pesce and Ignazio Oliva. Important art collectors, like Gaspar Roomer, supported his work.

Famous Works and Themes

Domenico Gargiulo painted in the Certosa di San Martino. This was a large monastery in Naples. He created art in different parts of the building.

He also painted important historical events from his time. For example, he painted scenes of the uprising led by Masaniello. This was a rebellion that happened in Naples. He also painted about the serious disease outbreak in Naples in 1656. His paintings help us understand what life was like during these times.
