Dominic Oduro (born on August 13, 1985) is a professional footballer from Ghana. He played as a forward, which means he was usually trying to score goals. After his playing career, Oduro became an assistant coach for the Charlotte FC Academy team. This team plays in the United Premier Soccer League.
Dominic Oduro: A Speedy Football Star
Early Life and Starting Football
Dominic Oduro began his football journey in Ghana. He played for both Prempeh College and the University of Ghana. In 2004, he moved to the United States to attend Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).
At VCU, Oduro played in 41 matches. He scored 18 goals and made 5 assists. His amazing performance earned him the 2004 Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year award. He was also named a Third Team All-American. Oduro helped his college team, the VCU Rams, reach the quarterfinals of the 2004 NCAA Tournament. This was the highest they had ever gone in the tournament. In 2005, he also played for Richmond Kickers Future in the USL Premier Development League. He scored 16 goals in just 13 games for them.
Playing in Major League Soccer (MLS)
Dominic Oduro was chosen by FC Dallas in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft. This was a big step for his professional career.
Joining FC Dallas
Oduro played his first game for FC Dallas on June 28, 2006. He came into the game as a substitute. He scored his first goal in the MLS on July 8, 2006, against the New York Red Bulls. Fans and coaches loved Oduro's incredible speed and hard work. He often came off the bench to give the team's attack a boost. He played in 70 league matches for FC Dallas. His best year there was 2008, when he scored 5 goals in 25 games.
Moving to New York and Houston
On January 12, 2009, Oduro was traded to the New York Red Bulls. He played only a few games for them. Less than five months later, on May 27, 2009, he was traded again. This time, he joined the Houston Dynamo.
Oduro made his first start for Houston on July 1, 2009. This game was part of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Houston won the match 2–0. He stayed with Houston for the 2009 and 2010 MLS seasons. After 2010, he tried to play overseas but returned to Houston in 2011.
Shining with Chicago Fire
After playing one game in 2011, Oduro was traded to Chicago Fire on March 23, 2011. He did very well with Chicago, scoring 12 goals in his first season. Because of his great play in 2011, he received the Supporters Player of the Year award. This award came from the Chicago Fire's dedicated fan group, Section 8 Chicago.
Time with Columbus and Toronto
On February 1, 2013, Oduro was traded to Columbus Crew. He played for Columbus for two seasons, from 2013 to 2014. During this time, he played 43 matches and scored 13 goals. On June 6, 2014, Oduro was traded again, this time to Toronto FC. He played 24 games for Toronto, scoring 2 goals.
Playing for Montreal and San Jose
On January 27, 2015, Oduro moved to the Montreal Impact. He played for Montreal from 2015 to 2018. He appeared in 108 matches and scored 18 goals across all competitions. On August 8, 2018, Oduro was traded to the San Jose Earthquakes. He played 5 games for them.
Final Club: Charlotte Independence
On February 15, 2019, Oduro signed with Charlotte Independence. This team plays in the USL Championship. He played 33 games for them and scored 8 goals. He left Charlotte at the end of the 2019 season.
Playing for Ghana
Dominic Oduro was called to play for the Ghana squad on February 26, 2012. He made his first appearance for Ghana against Chile on February 29, 2012. The game was played in Chester, Pennsylvania.
Becoming a Coach
After his playing career, Oduro started coaching. In 2022, he began coaching the Charlotte FC U14 team. In 2023, he became the coach for Charlotte FC's semi-pro team in the United Premier Soccer League.
