About Don Campbell
Don Campbell began his music career in the early 1980s. He was a member of several reggae bands. These included Undivided Roots, Creation Rebel, Singers and Players, and Dub Syndicate. After gaining experience with these groups, he started his solo career.
He was also a talented drummer. Don Campbell played drums for other artists, like Vivian Jones. His drumming was very popular in the reggae music scene. He also played drums on Bim Sherman's album Across the Red Sea. In 1982, he played drums and percussion on the first Dub Syndicate album, The Pounding System. He also played drums on Creation Rebel's Lows and Highs album that same year.
In 1983, Don Campbell played drums for the Singers and Players album Staggering Heights. This album featured well-known musicians like Congo Ashanti Roy and George Oban. Famous horn player Headley Bennett also played on these albums. These recordings took place at Berry Street Studio and The Manor Studio. These studios were becoming popular for reggae artists.
Don Campbell released his first solo song in 1993. It quickly became a hit on the British reggae charts. His first three songs and his first album all reached the top of the charts. In 1994, he won six awards at the British Reggae Industry Awards.
Later, he worked with General Saint. They released several popular songs together. One was a version of Neil Sedaka's "Oh! Carol". It reached number 54 on the UK Singles Chart. They also had hits with "Save the Last Dance for Me" and "Stop That Train". Their songs were put together on the 1995 album Time on the Move.
Since then, Don Campbell has recorded many more albums. He also recorded a version of the Bee Gees's "Islands in the Stream" with J. C. Lodge. In 2003, he performed at the Bob Marley Day Festival in Long Beach, California.
