Donald was part of the Maclean family, a well-known clan in Scotland. His father was John of Tarbert. John was the third son of Hector Maclean, 2nd Laird of Torloisk.

Donald was admired for his polite ways and friendly nature. He was also a brave soldier. At the Battle of Sheriffmuir, a big battle fought in 1715, he was a Major. He led a group of soldiers under Sir John Maclean, 4th Baronet. Donald was praised for being smart and courageous during the battle.

He married a woman named Mary. She was the daughter of Archibald Campbell of Sunderland. Donald and Mary had many children together, including four sons and six daughters. One of their sons, Allan, grew up to become a General in the army. Another son, Archibald, lived in a place called Laggan. Their eldest son, Hector Maclean, 6th Laird of Torloisk, later became the next Laird.

Donald Maclean passed away on August 20, 1748. After his death, his eldest son, Hector, took over as the 6th Laird of Torloisk.
