Donald MacArthur Ross, also known as Lord Ross, was born on March 29, 1927. He is a very important retired judge from Scotland. He used to be the Lord Justice Clerk, which is the second highest judge in the country.
About Lord Ross
Lord Ross was born in Dundee, a city in Scotland. He went to school at the High School of Dundee. Later, he studied at the University of Edinburgh. He is married and has two daughters. He also has six grandchildren.
His Career in Law
Lord Ross started his career as a lawyer. In 1964, he became a King's Counsel. This is a special title for experienced lawyers.
He held several important positions:
- From 1972 to 1973, he was a Sheriff of Ayr and Bute. A sheriff is a judge who handles many types of cases.
- From 1973 to 1976, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Advocates. This means he led the group of lawyers in Scotland.
- On November 17, 1976, he became a Senator of the College of Justice. This is another name for a high-ranking judge.
His most important role was as the Lord Justice Clerk. He held this position from 1985 until 1997. This made him the second most senior judge in all of Scotland.
Other Roles and Honors
In 1988, Heriot-Watt University gave Lord Ross an special award called an Honorary Doctorate. This was to recognize his achievements.
He also had roles outside of the law:
- In 1990 and 1991, he was the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. This is a special representative of the King or Queen to the Church.
- He is an elder at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh, which means he helps lead the church.
From 1997 to 2001, Lord Ross was the Chairman of the Judicial Studies Committee for Scotland. This group helps judges learn and improve. In 1985, he became a Privy Counsellor, which is an advisor to the King or Queen. He was also elected a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1988. This is a group of experts in science and learning. He was even a Vice-President of this society from 1999 to 2002.
Today, he is the Honorary President of The Dundee High School Old Boys' Club. This club is for former students of his old school.
