The Donegal Mills Plantation is a very old group of buildings in East Donegal Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It's like a small historic village! This special place includes an old grist mill, a big mansion, a house where the mill worker lived, and a bake house. These buildings show us what life was like many years ago.

What is Donegal Mills Plantation?

Donegal Mills Plantation is a historic site in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. It's known for its well-preserved buildings from the 1700s and 1800s. The entire area covers about 3.5 acres. It's a great example of early American history and how people lived and worked.

The Main Buildings

The plantation has several important buildings. Each one played a key role in the daily life and work of the people who lived there. Let's explore them!

The Mill

The mill was built way back in 1775. It's a tall building with three stories. A grist mill is a place where grains like corn or wheat are ground into flour. This mill would have been very important for the local community, helping to make food.

The Mansion House

The main part of the mansion was built before 1790. It's a two-story building made of stone, covered with a smooth plaster called stucco. It has a sloped roof, called a gable roof. Around 1820, a kitchen wing was added. Later, around 1830, another two-story stone section was built. The mansion has a long, two-story porch. This porch is held up by five columns made of brick and stucco.

The Miller's House

The miller's house was built around the same time as the mansion. It's a 3 1/2-story building, also made of stuccoed stone with a gable roof. This is where the person who operated the mill would have lived. It was made bigger around 1830 to its current size.

The Bake House

The bake house is a two-story building with a gable roof. It's made of wood. This building would have been used for baking bread and other foods. It was a separate building to keep the main house safe from fire.

A Historic Landmark

The Donegal Mills Plantation is so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This means it's recognized as a special place that needs to be protected because of its history and architecture.
