About Donna Williams Powell
Donna grew up in Surrey, England. While she was in high school, she met Adam Powell, who would later become her husband and business partner.
She studied at the University of Nottingham. Before creating Neopets, Donna worked in marketing and web design. From 1997 to 1999, she helped run a company called Shout! Advertising. This company managed a large online advertising program. After that, she worked at Speedyclick.com, focusing on website development and internet ads.
Creating Neopets
In September 1999, Donna Williams Powell and Adam Powell launched Neopets. Neopets is a virtual pet website where users can create and care for digital pets called Neopets. They can also explore a fantasy world called Neopia.
Donna was in charge of managing the website and its daily operations. This included planning new content and designing games. She also helped manage product promotions and licensing. She helped Neopets grow beyond just the website. It expanded into things like console games, soft toys, fast-food promotions, and even collectible card games.
In 2003, she helped set up a partnership with Beckett Media. This led to the creation of Neopets: The Official Magazine. Under Donna's leadership, Neopets grew from its start to over 140 million accounts. It also had 5 billion pageviews each month. In 2005, the company was sold to Viacom for a large sum of money.
Starting Meteor Games
In 2008, Donna and Adam Powell started a new company called Meteor Games. This was an independent game studio located in West Hollywood, California.
Meteor Games' first big project was a game called Twin Skies. The first public preview of this game was shown at the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) in Seattle. The game was first planned to be in 3D. However, it was later changed to be a 2D Flash game. In December 2011, Meteor Games closed down most of its operations.
