Doris Alejandrina Gutiérrez (born August 21, 1947) is a Honduran lawyer and politician. She is currently one of the Vice Presidents of Honduras. Before this, she was a Representative in the National Congress of Honduras, representing the Innovation and Unity Party. Many people in Honduras know her by her fun nickname, "The Dancing Representative."
Biography
Early Life and Education
Doris Gutiérrez was born on August 21, 1947, in Comayagüela, Honduras. Her mother was Martha Gutiérrez, and her father was Armando Uclés Sierra. She also has a brother named José de la Paz Herrera. Doris was raised by her mother and grandmother.
She completed her first years of school at the Universidad José Cecilio del Valle. Later, she graduated from the Sacred Heart Institute in Tegucigalpa, becoming a teacher with excellent grades. She continued to earn more academic awards while studying education. Her first teaching job was in Trinidad, in the Santa Bárbara Department, where she taught for 14 years.
Political Career
While working with groups of organized workers, Doris Gutiérrez decided to get involved in politics. In 1995, she joined the Democratic Unification Party. She became a substitute deputy, which means she could take the place of another elected official if needed. Later, she became a full Representative in the National Congress of Honduras.
Awards and Key Projects
In December 2015, Doris Gutiérrez received the Maya Award from the Mexican Institute of Evaluation, which is a special honor.
In early March 2016, she announced two important projects. One was to declare the Gualcarque river a National Heritage area, meaning it would be protected for its special importance. The second project was to officially recognize Berta Cáceres as a national heroine. Berta Cáceres was a brave activist who worked hard to protect the Gualcarque river and its surrounding lands. Doris Gutiérrez wanted the area to be named after her to honor her efforts.
