About Doris Gutiérrez

Doris Gutiérrez was born in Comayagüela, Honduras. Her mother was Martha Gutiérrez, and her father was Armando Uclés Sierra. She is also the sister of José de la Paz Herrera. Doris was raised by her mother and grandmother.

Her Education and Early Career

Doris Gutiérrez went to the Universidad José Cecilio del Valle for her first studies. She then became a teacher after graduating from the Sacred Heart Institute in Tegucigalpa. She was a very good student and earned many awards for her studies in education.

Her first job as a teacher was in Trinidad, a town in the Santa Bárbara Department. She taught there for 14 years.

Entering the World of Politics

While working with groups of people who supported workers' rights, Doris decided to get involved in politics. In 1995, she joined the Democratic Unification Party. She became a "substitute deputy," which means she could take the place of another elected official if needed.

Awards and Recognition

In December 2015, Doris Gutiérrez received the Maya Award from the Mexican Institute of Evaluation. This award recognized her important work.

In early March 2016, Doris Gutiérrez announced two important plans. One was to have the Gualcarque river recognized as a special national heritage area. The other was to honor Berta Cáceres, who worked hard to protect this river, by calling her a national heroine and naming the area after her.
