Dorothée Le Maître (born September 1, 1896 – died January 26, 1990) was a French paleontologist. She was well-known for her studies of ancient plants and animals. Her research focused on fossils from the Devonian period found in North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Early Life and Education

Dorothée Le Maître started her education at Angers Free University. She then went on to the Catholic University of Lille. In 1926, she earned her bachelor's degree from this university. She continued her studies there, working towards her advanced degree. In 1934, she successfully earned her Ph.D.

Career and Research

Le Maître published her first scientific paper in 1926. This was the same year she received her bachelor's degree. After completing her Ph.D., she joined the University of Lille. There, she worked as a geology researcher. Her studies included work on ancient sea creatures called Spongiomorphides. She also compared fossils from North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. She looked at how these fossils were similar to or different from those found in Europe. This helped scientists understand how life developed across different continents.

Honors and Awards

Dorothée Le Maître received several important awards for her work. In 1941, she was given the Prix Fontannes. Later, in 1956, she received the Kuhlmann Prize. The French Academy of Sciences honored her in 1959. They awarded her the Grand Prix Bonnet. She also served as the president of the Société Géologique du Nord in 1949. This was a significant role in the geological community.
