Early Life and Family

Dorothea Ackermann was born in a city called Danzig, which is now Gdańsk in Poland, on February 12, 1752. Her parents were both actors, so she grew up surrounded by the world of theater. This meant she started her acting career at a very young age.

Starting on Stage

Dorothea first appeared on stage when she was only four years old! Her very first role was a character named Annabella in a play called Miss Sara Sampson by a famous writer named Gotthold Ephraim Lessing. Imagine being on stage at that age!

A Rising Star in Theater

Dorothea Ackermann was most active as an actress between 1769 and 1778. During these years, she played many different and important roles in popular plays of the time.

Life After the Stage

In 1778, Dorothea decided to stop acting on stage. She married a man named Johann Christoph Unzer, who was a respected doctor and poet in a town called Altona.

A New Chapter

After her marriage, Dorothea chose to live a different kind of life. She joined the upper-class society in the city, which was something she could do as the wife of a famous doctor. She lived with her stepbrother, Friedrich Ludwig Schröder, in his home in Rellingen from 1797 until she passed away on October 21, 1821.
