Dorothea Smartt was born in London, England, in 1963. Her parents came from Barbados. She grew up in London and later went to college. She studied Social Sciences at South Bank Polytechnic. Then, she earned a master's degree in anthropology from Hunter College in New York.

Dorothea has had many interesting roles. She was a poet in residence at Brixton Market. She was also an artist at the Institute of Contemporary Arts. She has taught creative writing at universities. These include Birkbeck College, University of London, and Leeds University.

She was also a poetry editor for Sable LitMag. She was a guest writer at Florida International University and Oberlin College. Her poems have appeared in many books.
