Dorothy Walter Baruch (born August 5, 1899 – died September 4, 1962) was an American expert in child psychology and a popular author of children's books. She spent her career studying how children learn to speak and grow. She also wrote many fun stories for young readers.

About Dorothy Baruch's Life

Dorothy Walter Baruch was born in San Francisco, California. Her parents were Clarence and Rosalie Walter. She loved learning and went to several colleges. She studied at Bryn Mawr College and the University of Southern California. Later, she attended Whittier College, where she earned a master's degree in 1931.

She continued her studies and received her PhD from Claremont Graduate University in 1937. She was actually the very first person to earn a doctoral degree from Claremont College! In 1919, she married Herbert Baruch. They had two children, Herbert and Nancy. Later, they divorced, and in 1946, she married Dr. Hyman Miller. Dorothy Baruch passed away in Los Angeles in 1962.

Dorothy Baruch's Career and Work

Dorothy Baruch was a pioneer in understanding children. She founded and directed the Grammercy Cooperative Nursery School. She also did important research on how children learn language at the Normandie Nursery School.

From 1930 to 1940, she taught education at Whittier College. She also worked with the National Council of Jewish Women, leading their parent education program. From 1937 to 1941, she led the public relations for the National Association for Nursery Education.

In 1946, Dr. Baruch opened her own practice as a consulting psychologist. She also gave many talks about child psychology and education. She wrote over twenty fiction books for children. She also wrote eleven nonfiction books about psychology and child development.
