Dorset's Role in the War
Most of Dorset supported the King, meaning they were Royalists. However, two important towns, Lyme Regis and Poole, strongly supported Parliament. This made Dorset a key area for both sides to try and control.
Early Fights in 1642
The war started in 1642. One of the first clashes in Dorset was the Battle of Babylon Hill. This fight happened near Sherborne but neither side won clearly. It showed that the war would be long and difficult.
Key Events of 1643

Also in 1643, Portland Castle was taken over by Royalist soldiers. They used a clever trick to get inside. They pretended to be Parliamentarian soldiers, which allowed them to surprise the guards and capture the castle.
The Siege of Lyme Regis in 1644
In 1644, the Parliamentarian town of Lyme Regis faced a long attack. Royalist forces tried to capture it in what was called the Siege of Lyme Regis. This siege lasted for eight weeks. The people of Lyme Regis bravely defended their town, and the Royalists eventually had to give up.
