The Story of Double Cola
How It All Started
The company began in 1922 as the Good Grape Company. It was started by Charles D. Little and Joe S. Foster in Huntsville, Alabama. They used to work for another soda company called Chero-Cola.
Their first product was called Good Grape. Later that same year, the company moved to Chattanooga.
New Names and New Drinks
In 1924, Charles D. Little created a new drink called Marvel Cola. Because of this new drink, the company changed its name to Seminole Flavor Company.
Marvel Cola was later changed and renamed Jumbo Cola. Then, in 1933, the Double-Cola drink was created. It quickly became the company's most important product.
Why "Double" Cola?
The drink was named Double-Cola because its bottles were 12 ounces (about 350 ml). This was twice the size of other soda bottles sold at that time!
Soon after, they made other "Double" flavored drinks. These included Double-Orange, Double-Lemon, Double-Grape, and "Double-Dry" ginger ale.
Challenges During Wartime
During World War II, there was a shortage of sugar. Even with this problem, Seminole kept making Double-Cola in its larger bottles. This made it harder for them to produce as much soda.
In 1953, Seminole Flavor Company changed its name again. It became The Double Cola Company, which is what it's called today.
Introducing Ski Soda
In 1956, the company created a new soda called Ski. Ski is a citrus soda, similar to Sun Drop, and it's made with real orange and lemon juice.
The name "Ski" came from an employee named Dot Myers. She suggested the name after a fun ski trip on Chickamauga Lake. The company liked the name, and it stuck!
Making History with Bottle Sizes
In 1957, Double-Cola made history. It was the first major soft drink to be sold in a large 16-ounce (about 470 ml) bottle that could be returned and refilled.
In 1962, Diet Double Cola was launched. That same year, Charles D. Little sold the company to Fairmont Foods. Later, in 1980, K.J. International, Inc. bought the company. It is still privately owned today.
Double Cola in Hong Kong
In the summer of 1960, Double Cola was sold in Hong Kong with a Chinese name, "(得寶可樂)". It was a very large bottle, 16 ounces, with lots of fizz. It cost only 40 Hong Kong cents and could fill three regular drink cups!

New Look, Same Great Taste
In 2010, Diet Double-Cola was updated. It was made with Splenda to taste more like the regular Double-Cola.
Two years later, in 2012, Double Cola got new packaging and a fresh look. The ingredients inside the drinks stayed exactly the same.
Expanding Beyond Sodas
Since 2013, The Double Cola Company has started making more than just soft drinks.
- Quad Energy: This energy drink was released in 2012. It comes in five different flavors and has ingredients to give you an energy boost.
- MINŌKU Coconut Water: Also in 2012, the company started selling MINŌKU Coconut Water. This coconut water comes from Thailand and is sold all over the United States.
- ZILI Tea: The Double Cola Company also has a line of teas called ZILI Tea. These are natural teas that are meant to hydrate and nourish you.
