Be6++ is double check

A double check is a special situation in the game of chess. It happens when a player's king is attacked by two of the opponent's pieces at the same time. This is a very strong move because it forces the king to move to safety.

What is a Double Check in Chess?

In chess, a "check" happens when your king is under attack by an opponent's piece. When your king is in check, you must immediately make a move to get it out of danger.

A double check is even more serious. It means your king is being attacked by two different pieces at the same time. This is a very powerful move because it limits your options to escape the attack.

How a Double Check Happens

Double checks usually happen because of a special move called a discovered attack. Here is how it works:

  • Imagine one of your pieces is blocking the attack of another piece.
  • When you move the blocking piece, it opens up a line for the piece behind it to attack the king. This is the first check.
  • At the same time, the piece you just moved also attacks the king. This is the second check.

So, both the piece that moved and the piece that was revealed are now attacking the king. This creates the double check.

Why Double Check is Powerful

A double check is one of the strongest attacks in chess for a few reasons:

  • Forces the King to Move: When your king is in a double check, you cannot block both attacks with one piece. You also cannot capture one of the attacking pieces to solve the problem, because the other attacker will still be checking your king. The only way to get out of a double check is to move your king to a safe square.
  • Limited Options: Because the king must move, you cannot use your turn to attack your opponent, capture one of their pieces, or improve your position. You are forced to react to the double check.
  • Can Lead to Checkmate: Often, a double check is part of a plan to deliver a checkmate. If there are no safe squares for the king to move to, then the double check becomes a checkmate, and the game ends.

Understanding double checks is important for any chess player. It helps you see powerful attacks and also avoid them when your opponent tries to use them against you.
