Douglas Burnett Gibbs, known as Doug Gibbs, is an American singer, songwriter, and musician. He also produces records and plays as a session musician for other artists. In 1972, he had a popular song called "I'll Always Have You There". It was a hit on the Billboard soul music chart. Doug Gibbs has worked with famous musicians like Little Richard, Billy Preston, and Chuck Jackson. A song he helped write was later used by the famous rapper Jay-Z in his hit song "Song Cry".
Doug Gibbs' Music Career
In 1971, Doug Gibbs worked on a Christian rock opera album called Truth of Truths. It was released on the Oak label. That same year, he sang background vocals on Billy Preston's album, I Wrote a Simple Song.
In 1972, Doug Gibbs released his own song, "I'll Always Have You There". The other side of the record was "Cloudy Day". Both songs were written by him and Bruce Fisher. The famous producer Ernie Freeman produced the single. Billboard Magazine reported that his song was played a lot on the radio in Chicago and San Francisco. On September 9, 1972, "I'll Always Have You There" entered the music charts. It reached its highest spot, #25, on October 7, 1972. Doug Gibbs even appeared on the TV show Soul Train on November 11, 1972.
In 1973, Doug Gibbs contributed to Chuck Jackson's album Through All Times. He sang background vocals and also helped write the song "Through All Times". That same year, two of his songs, "Wrapped In Love" and "You And Me", appeared on Genie Brown's album A Woman Alone.
Doug Gibbs played a big part in Bobby Glenn's 1976 album Shout It Out. He helped produce and arrange the music. He also wrote the song "Morning Song" and helped write six other songs. Doug played piano, electric piano, and clavinet on the album. Years later, a song from that album, "Sounds Like a Love Song", became very famous. Doug Gibbs and Ralph Johnson wrote it. The famous rapper Jay-Z used parts of it in his hit song "Song Cry".
Today, Doug Gibbs is the CEO of a music company called Chitty Chitty Music.
