Sir Douglas Jackman was a very important officer in the Royal Air Force (RAF). He was born on October 26, 1902, and passed away on June 15, 1991. He reached a high rank called Air Marshal, which is like a general in the air force. He was known for leading a special part of the RAF called the RAF Maintenance Command.

Joining the RAF

Douglas Jackman joined the Royal Air Force in 1926. When he first started, he worked as a Stores Officer. This meant he was in charge of making sure the RAF had all the supplies and equipment it needed.

World War II Service

During World War II, Jackman played a key role. He worked in different administrative jobs, helping to organize the air force's efforts.

  • He was an Administrative Staff Officer at the main headquarters for the RAF in the Middle East.
  • Later, he became the Air Officer Administration for the Mediterranean Air Command. This role meant he managed all the administrative tasks for air operations in the Mediterranean region.
  • He also helped lead the administration for the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces and the Balkan Air Force. These groups were important for air power in different parts of the war.

After the War

After World War II ended, Sir Douglas Jackman continued his important work.

  • He was put in charge of movements, making sure people and supplies got to where they needed to be.
  • He also helped with planning and forecasting for the RAF at the Air Ministry, which is like the government department for the air force.

Leading Key Commands

In 1952, he became the Air Officer Commanding for No. 40 Group. This group was responsible for moving supplies and equipment for the RAF.

  • In 1955, he became the Director-General of Equipment at the Air Ministry. This was a big job where he oversaw all the equipment the RAF used.
  • His most important role came in 1958 when he was appointed Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of RAF Maintenance Command. This command was vital for keeping all RAF aircraft and equipment in working order. He even helped lay the first stone for a new headquarters building in Andover.

Sir Douglas Jackman retired from the RAF in 1961 after many years of dedicated service.

Life After Retirement

Even after retiring from the Royal Air Force, Sir Douglas Jackman continued to serve. He became the Chief Co-ordinator for a special program called the Anglo-American Community Relations Scheme in the UK. This program helped build good relationships between the British and American communities.
