The Dr. Louis J. Martel House is a historic home located at 122–124 Bartlett Street in Lewiston, Maine. It was built in 1883. This house is a great example of Queen Anne Victorian architecture, which was a popular style back then. It's special because it was the home of Louis Martel. He was the first Franco-American politician from Maine to become well-known across the whole state. He also helped the Lewiston community a lot. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, which means it's an important historical site.
About the Martel House
The Martel House is located just east of downtown Lewiston. It sits at the corner of Bartlett and Walnut Streets. The area around it has always had many homes for working families.
The house is made of brick and is two-and-a-half stories tall. It has a special roof shape called a hip roof. This roof has sections that stick out with pointed tops, called gables. A cool feature is the three-story tower, or turret, on one corner. This turret has an eight-sided roof with a decorative top piece.
At the front of the house, there's a two-story porch. It has thin columns that support it. The top of the porch has a gable with fancy trim. To the left of the porch, there's a bay window that sticks out with many sides. The turret on the right side also sticks out in a similar way. The third floor of the turret even has a small porch.
History of the House and Dr. Louis J. Martel
The Martel House was built in 1883. It was likely the only brick house built in the French-speaking part of Lewiston during the 1800s.
Dr. Louis J. Martel was a very important person in the Franco-American community across the country. Franco-Americans are people in the United States whose families came from French-speaking Canada. Dr. Martel published a newspaper in French. He also served in the state government and on the local city council. In 1893, he almost became mayor of Lewiston.
Dr. Martel played a big part in starting what is now Saint Mary's Regional Medical Center. He also helped organize the Roman Catholic parish of Saints Peter and Paul.
