Drums of Mer is an exciting Australian adventure novel written in 1933 by Ion Idriess. It tells a story set in the beautiful Torres Strait islands.
About the Book's Story
This novel is based on a real-life event. It tells the tale of people who survived a shipwreck, like those from the Charles Eaton ship. The characters in the book are a mix of different real people.
The author, Ion Idriess, once described the book as very intense. He said it was told from the viewpoint of the Torres Strait Islanders. He included exciting adventures and conflicts, which readers seemed to enjoy.
Interestingly, Idriess later used the same ideas to write a children's book. This book was called Headhunters of the Coral Sea.
Plans for a Movie
In the late 1970s, a filmmaker named Sandy Harbutt wanted to turn Drums of Mer into a movie. His wife, Helen Morse, was going to help produce it. They even traveled to different places in 1977 to research for the film.
In October 1977, Harbutt was working on the script. He hoped to start filming in April 1978. Even in 1999, Harbutt still said he planned to make the movie. However, the film was never made.
A Dance Performance
In 1996, the Aboriginal Islander Dance Theatre created a special show. This theater production was based on the story from the Drums of Mer novel.
