Rank Colonel

Colonel Dubhaltach Caoch Mac Coisdealbhaigh was an Irish soldier from the 17th century. He was also known as a "Rapparee," which was a name for Irish fighters who used guerrilla tactics against the English. He is remembered for his efforts to get his family's land back. He passed away on March 3, 1667.

Who Was Dubhaltach Caoch Mac Coisdealbhaigh?

Dubhaltach Caoch Mac Coisdealbhaigh belonged to the important Costello family. They were from a part of Ireland called Connacht. His brother, Tomás Láidir Mac Coisdealbhaigh, was also a soldier and a poet.

Early Life and Military Career

Dudley, or Dubhaltach, Costello started his military career early. In 1642, he was an officer in the army of the Confederate Catholics. This was a group of Irish Catholics who fought for their rights and land. Later, he became a colonel in the Spanish Royal Army. This shows he was a skilled and respected military leader.

Fighting for His Family's Land

After a period known as the Restoration, Dubhaltach returned to Ireland. He was very disappointed because he could not get his family's estates back. These lands had been taken by new landlords, especially the Dillon family.

Dubhaltach spent the rest of his life trying to reclaim what he felt was rightfully his. He led a long-running fight against the new Dillon landlords. In the summer of 1666, he was declared a "tory" and a "rebel." A tory at that time meant someone who was an outlaw or a rebel.

He carried out many actions against Thomas Dillon, 4th Viscount Dillon. These actions took place in the areas of Costello and Gallen in east Mayo. He continued his fight until he was killed by soldiers. This happened in Coolcarney, near Bunnyconnellan, in early March 1667.
