Duke of Cumberland's Regiment of Light Dragoons facts for kids
The Duke of Cumberland's Regiment of Light Dragoons was a special group of soldiers in the British Army. They were a type of cavalry unit, meaning they fought on horseback. These soldiers were called "Light Dragoons" because they were quick and could ride fast, often used for scouting or quick attacks. This regiment was formed in 1746 and later disbanded in 1749.
How the Regiment Started
This military unit was created by Prince William, Duke of Cumberland in 1746. He was a very important leader at the time. Most of the soldiers in this new regiment came from another group that had just been disbanded, called the Duke of Kingston's Regiment of Light Horse. The Duke of Cumberland's Regiment was given the number 15th Light Dragoons. It was actually the very first time a British Army unit was officially called "Light Dragoons"!
Serving in Europe
The regiment traveled to the Netherlands to serve during a big conflict called the War of the Austrian Succession. This was a major war involving many countries in Europe. The Duke of Cumberland's Regiment showed great bravery and skill during a specific fight known as the Battle of Lauffeld. They really stood out in that battle.
The End of the Regiment
After the war ended, a peace agreement was signed in 1748. This agreement was called the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle. Because the war was over, the regiment was called back to the United Kingdom. In September 1748, Lord Robert Manners took over as the colonel, or leader, of the regiment from the Duke of Cumberland. Not long after, in 1749, the regiment was officially disbanded, meaning it was no longer an active military unit.
