Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Duncan Urquhart (died 11 January 1742) was an army officer and a Scottish politician. He came from Burdsyards in Morayshire, Scotland. He served in the House of Commons, which is like the main law-making group in Britain, from 1737 to 1741. He was part of the Whig party, a political group at the time.

Early Life and Army Career

Duncan Urquhart was the oldest son of Captain Robert Urquhart, who was also a Member of Parliament (MP). His mother was Mary Forbes. Her father, Duncan Forbes, was also an MP.

Duncan joined the army when he was young. In 1726, he became an ensign, which is a junior officer rank. By 1731, he was promoted to lieutenant. He also served as a "provost" for a time in the town of Forres. A provost is like a mayor or a chief magistrate of a Scottish town.

Political Journey

In 1737, Duncan Urquhart became a Member of Parliament for Inverness Burghs. This happened during a special election called a by-election. His uncle, Duncan Forbes, helped him get elected.

In 1738, he received another promotion in the army, becoming a lieutenant and captain in the 2nd Foot Guards. While in Parliament, Duncan Urquhart generally supported the government's plans. For example, he voted with them on important issues like the Spanish convention in 1739 and a "place bill" in 1740. These were laws debated in Parliament.

He decided not to run for re-election in the 1741 British general election. In 1741, Duncan Urquhart took over his father's estate and responsibilities.

Later Life

Duncan Urquhart passed away on 11 January 1742. He was not married.
