About the Dundas Mahogany Tree

The Dundas mahogany is a tall tree. It usually grows to be about 15 to 25 meters (50 to 80 feet) high. It has very smooth and shiny bark. The bark can be light grey, pink, or creamy white.

Young plants have dull green leaves. These leaves are shaped like ovals. They are about 2 to 7 centimeters (0.8 to 2.8 inches) long.

The adult leaves are bright, glossy green. They are long and narrow, like a lance. These leaves can be 7 to 15 centimeters (2.8 to 5.9 inches) long. They grow on a small stem called a petiole.

The tree's flower buds grow in small groups. There are usually eleven, thirteen, or fifteen buds in each group. These buds are shaped like cylinders or ovals. They are about 6 to 8 millimeters long.

The Dundas mahogany flowers from March to June. Its flowers are white. After flowering, the tree produces woody, round fruits. These fruits are like small capsules. They are about 4 to 6 millimeters long.

How it Got its Name

The scientific name for this tree is Eucalyptus brockwayi. It was first officially described in 1943. A botanist named Charles Gardner gave it its name.

The second part of its name, brockwayi, honors a person. It is named after George Ernest Emerson Brockway. He helped us learn a lot about Eucalyptus trees in Western Australia.

Where Does it Grow?

The Dundas mahogany tree grows in specific places. You can find it in small groups. These groups are usually on low, rocky hills and slopes.

It grows in woodlands and forests. These areas are near the towns of Norseman and Dundas. Both towns are in Western Australia.

Protecting This Tree

The Government of Western Australia wants to protect the Dundas mahogany. Their Department of Parks and Wildlife lists it as "Priority Three."

This means we don't know a lot about the tree. It is found in only a few places. However, it is not currently in danger of disappearing soon.
