Dunlap, Missouri facts for kids
Dunlap is a small village located in Grundy County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's a quiet place, like many small communities found across the United States.
History of Dunlap
The area where Dunlap is located has an interesting past, with the village changing its name a few times before settling on "Dunlap."
Early Names and Post Office
Before it was known as Dunlap, this community had a few different names. It was first called "Banta." A post office, which is a place where mail is handled, was opened here in 1881 under the name Banta.
Just one year later, in 1882, the name of the post office, and likely the community, was changed to "Corneau." This was another step in its early development.
Becoming Dunlap
The name changed again in 1888, when it officially became "Dunlap." This name stuck, and it's what the village is known as today. Historians believe the village was named after William Dunlap, who was one of the first people to settle in the area. Settlers are people who move to a new place to live and build a community.
Post Office Closes
The Dunlap post office served the community for many years. However, like many small post offices in rural areas, it eventually closed down. The Dunlap post office stopped operating in 1942. Even though the post office closed, the village of Dunlap continued to exist, maintaining its place on the map of Grundy County, Missouri.
