Dunn, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Dunn is a small, quiet place in the southwestern part of Texas County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county. You can find Dunn just south of U.S. Route 60, about four miles west of a town called Cabool.

How Dunn Got Its Name

Dunn has an interesting story about its name! The community itself was named after a local family, the Dunn family, who lived in the area. However, when people wanted to open a post office there, they ran into a problem. The United States Postal Service didn't approve the name "Dunn" for the post office.

So, in 1919, a post office was opened, but it was given a different name: Impo. This unique name came from the word "Important." Even though the post office was called Impo, the community itself continued to be known as Dunn. The Impo post office served the area for many years, finally closing its doors in 1955.
