The Dwight–Derby House is a very old and special house located at 7 Frairy Street in Medfield, Massachusetts. Scientists looked at samples from the house frame in 2007. They found that the oldest part of the house was built way back in 1697. Another part was added in 1713.

The town of Medfield bought this historic house in 1996. It was then added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. This list includes important buildings, sites, and objects that are worth saving because of their history.

History of the Dwight–Derby House

The first part of the Dwight–Derby House was built in 1697. A man named John Dwight built it after he got married in 1696. His parents were Timothy and Mary Dwight.

Later, the Derby family lived in the house for many generations. The first Derby to live there was John Derby. He was the grandson of Elias Hasket Derby. Elias Hasket Derby was known as America's first millionaire, from Salem, Massachusetts.

The Dwight–Derby House Today

Today, the Dwight–Derby House still stands in its original spot. It sits on a half-acre piece of land. From the house, you can look out over Meeting House Pond.

Saving and Sharing History

After the town of Medfield bought the house in 1996, a group was formed. This group is called the Friends of the Dwight–Derby House, Inc. Their goal is to fix up the house, take care of it, and share its history with everyone.

Thanks to many kind donations and grants, the house has been repaired. Grants came from places like the Massachusetts Historical Commission and the National Trust. These repairs help make sure the house will last for many more years.
