Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Dynod son of Pabo (also known as Dynod the Stout or Dynod Fawr) was an important ruler in ancient Britain. He lived around the year 595. He ruled a small kingdom in the northern Pennine mountains. This area was part of what historians call the "Old North" (Hen Ogledd). This was Britain after the Romans had left. His kingdom was sometimes called Regio Dunutinga and was located in what is now North Yorkshire.

Dynod was the son of a famous leader named Pabo Post Prydain. It is believed that Dynod took over his father's kingdom. He was also the father of Saint Deiniol, who founded the important city of Bangor in Wales.

Dynod's Role in Ancient Battles

Dynod is mentioned in old Welsh stories called the Welsh Triads. These stories list him as one of the "Three Pillars of Battle" of Britain. This means he was considered one of the strongest and most important warriors.

He is also mentioned in a poem about the death of Urien of Rheged, another powerful leader. The poem says that Dynod was very brave and never retreated from a fight. After Urien was killed, Dynod is said to have attacked Urien's kingdom of Rheged. He fought against Urien's sons, Owain and Pascent. Dynod is believed to have died fighting against the Angles, who were invaders from Bernicia, around the year 595 AD.

Who Was Dynod?

Sometimes, Dynod son of Pabo is confused with another important person named Saint Dunod. This Saint Dunod was an abbot from Bangor Iscoed.

Some historians also think that Dynod might be the same person as a baby named Dinogad. This baby is mentioned in a very old Welsh lullaby called "Dinogad's Smock."
