Early Life and Education
Eóin Tennyson grew up in Northern Ireland. He went to St. Patrick's Academy for school.
After finishing school, he studied accounting at Queen's University Belfast. He earned his first degree in 2019. While at university, he was chosen to be the leader of Alliance Youth, the youth section of his political party.
In 2020, he earned a Master's degree in Accounting from University College Dublin. He then started working as an auditor for the company Deloitte in Belfast.
Political Career
Tennyson's work in politics began before he became an MLA. He has held several important roles and participated in different elections.
Starting in Local Government
In 2019, Tennyson was elected to the Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council. A council is a group of people who make decisions for a local area. He represented the Lagan River area.
Later that year, he ran in the 2019 general election for the Upper Bann seat. He came in third place but received more votes for his party than in the previous election.
Becoming a Member of the Assembly
In the 2022 Assembly election, Tennyson was elected as an MLA for Upper Bann. At 23 years old, he became the youngest person elected to the Assembly at that time.
The Northern Ireland Assembly needs a Speaker to be chosen before it can work properly. In May 2022, Tennyson spoke at the Assembly about the need to get back to work. After the government was restored in February 2024, he joined the Committee for Finance and the Northern Ireland Policing Board.
He also ran for a seat in the 2024 general election for Upper Bann, again finishing in third place.
Becoming Deputy Leader
In September 2024, Tennyson announced he was running to become the deputy leader of the Alliance Party. Another MLA, Kate Nicholl, also ran for the position.
On 8 October 2024, Eóin Tennyson was elected as the new deputy leader. He said he was excited to work with the party's leader, Naomi Long.
