The E. M. Todd Company building, also known as the Todd's Ham Building, is a really old and interesting factory building in Richmond, Virginia. It's located in a part of the city called the Three Corners District. This building has a cool history: it started as a place where beer was made, then became famous for making delicious smoked ham and bacon. Today, it's been turned into cool apartments called the Todd Lofts. This building is so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places!
A Historic Building in Richmond
This special building was first built way back in 1892. Imagine how many things have changed since then! It's located in a busy part of Richmond, Virginia.
Over the years, the building grew bigger. New parts were added in 1919 and 1920 to make space for more work. It's a great example of how old buildings can be used for new purposes.
From Beer to Bacon
When the building was first opened, it wasn't making ham at all! It was home to the Richmond Brewery, a place where beer was produced.
Later, the E. M. Todd Company bought the building. This company was famous for making smoked ham and bacon. They added tall, five-story smokehouses to the building. These smokehouses were special rooms used to smoke meats, giving them a unique flavor and helping them last longer. The E. M. Todd Company stopped using this building in 1998.
A New Life: Todd Lofts
After the E. M. Todd Company moved out, the building found a new purpose. It was changed into modern apartments called the Todd Lofts. This is a great way to save historic buildings and give them a new life.
Because of its long history and importance, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. This means it's recognized as a special place that's worth protecting for future generations.
