About Bishop Eadberht
Eadberht became the bishop of Lindisfarne in 688. This happened after Saint Cuthbert, a very important religious leader, passed away in 687.
Protecting the Church Buildings
Eadberht made sure the church buildings were strong and lasted a long time. He used lead to cover the wooden church built by Saint Finan. This made the church much more durable and protected it from the weather.
Honoring Saint Cuthbert
Eadberht also started a special holy place to honor Saint Cuthbert on the island of Lindisfarne. This place became very important. Many people would travel there to visit, a journey known as a pilgrimage.
Eadberht's Simple Life
Eadberht was known for living a simple life. He liked to spend a lot of time alone, praying and thinking. He often went to a small island called Hobthrush near Lindisfarne for quiet reflection.
He was also very wise and knew a lot about the Bible. Eadberht believed in helping others. He would give one-tenth (10%) of everything he had to people who were poor.
When Eadberht died on May 6, 698, he was buried in the same spot where Saint Cuthbert's body had been placed earlier that year. Later, when monks left Lindisfarne in 875, they moved Eadberht's remains to Durham.
