Earlene Hill Hooper is an American politician who served in the New York State Assembly for many years. She represented District 18, which covers a large part of Nassau County. From 2009 to 2018, Ms. Hooper made history as the first woman to hold the position of Deputy Speaker in the Assembly.

Earlene Hooper's Journey
Early Life and Education
Earlene Hooper started her career as a social worker. This job involves helping people and families in need. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Norfolk State University. Later, she continued her education and received a Master's degree in Social Work from Adelphi University. Before becoming a politician, she worked as an administrator in New York State's Department of Social Services. This department helps children and families.
Entering Politics
Ms. Hooper was first elected to the New York State Assembly in a special election held on March 15, 1988. A special election happens when a political seat becomes empty before the regular election time. For a period, she was the only state legislator of color from Long Island, New York. This means she was the only person of color from that area serving in the state's law-making body.
Serving as Deputy Speaker
From 2009 to 2018, Earlene Hooper held an important leadership role as the Deputy Speaker of the New York State Assembly. In this position, she helped lead the Assembly's meetings and work. She was a key figure in making laws for New York State.
