Earlene Hooper's Journey

Early Life and Education

Earlene Hooper started her career as a social worker. This job involves helping people and families in need. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Norfolk State University. Later, she continued her education and received a Master's degree in Social Work from Adelphi University. Before becoming a politician, she worked as an administrator in New York State's Department of Social Services. This department helps children and families.

Entering Politics

Ms. Hooper was first elected to the New York State Assembly in a special election held on March 15, 1988. A special election happens when a political seat becomes empty before the regular election time. For a period, she was the only state legislator of color from Long Island, New York. This means she was the only person of color from that area serving in the state's law-making body.

Serving as Deputy Speaker

From 2009 to 2018, Earlene Hooper held an important leadership role as the Deputy Speaker of the New York State Assembly. In this position, she helped lead the Assembly's meetings and work. She was a key figure in making laws for New York State.

End of Her Term

After serving for many years, Ms. Hooper ran for re-election in the Democratic primary on September 13, 2018. She was not re-elected, and Taylor Raynor, a psychologist, won the primary election.
