A Look at Eastside Baptist Church
The Eastside Baptist Church is more than just a building. It is a place with a rich history. It has served its community for over a century. The church building itself is quite old. It was built in 1921.
The Church's Beginnings
The story of Eastside Baptist Church started even before the current building was constructed. The church congregation began in 1903. Back then, it was known as the Zion Bethel Church. The first meetings took place in a simple wooden house. This house was located right where the church stands today.
A New Home for the Congregation
As the community grew, the church needed a bigger space. So, in 1921, the beautiful building you see today was completed. This new building became the permanent home for the Eastside Baptist Church. It allowed more people to gather and worship together.
A Place in History
The Eastside Baptist Church is recognized as a very important historical site. On November 23, 1984, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history.
The church earned its spot on this list for a few reasons. It is one of the oldest church buildings in Okmulgee that served the African-American community. It is also one of the oldest churches in eastern Oklahoma that still looks much like it did when it was first built. This makes it a valuable piece of history. It helps us understand the past and the growth of communities in Oklahoma.
