runyonii

Echeveria runyonii is a cool flowering plant that belongs to the Crassulaceae family. This plant is originally from the state of Tamaulipas in Mexico. Many different types of Echeveria runyonii have been grown by people. These special types are called cultivars.

About Echeveria runyonii

Scientists first described Echeveria runyonii in 1935. It was named after Robert Runyon, who was a plant expert from Texas. He found the first example of this plant in a garden in Matamoros, Mexico, back in 1922. For a long time, no one knew where these plants grew naturally. Then, in 1990, a team from Yucca Do Nursery found them growing in the wild.

Scientists can also identify Echeveria plants by looking at their chromosomes. E. runyonii has 14 chromosomes. This helps them tell different species apart, even if they look a bit different. The name Echeveria comes from Atanasio Echeverría y Godoy. He was an artist who drew plants for a book called Flora Mexicana.

What it Looks Like

Echeveria runyonii grows in a shape like a rose, called a rosette. This rosette is usually about 8 to 10 centimeters (3 to 4 inches) wide. Its leaves are shaped like spoons and are a pretty pinkish-white color. They are also a bit powdery, which is called glaucous. Each leaf is about 6 to 8 centimeters (2.5 to 3 inches) long.

The plant has a single stem that can grow to about 10 centimeters (4 inches) tall. It is about 1 centimeter (0.4 inches) thick. The flower stalks grow tall, about 15 to 20 centimeters (6 to 8 inches) high. They have small leaves called bracts and red flowers. These flowers are about 19 to 20 millimeters (0.75 inches) long.

Many special types of Echeveria runyonii have been created. These are called cultivars. Some well-known ones include 'Texas Rose', 'Dr. Butterfield', 'Lucita', and 'Tom Allen'.

One very popular cultivar is 'Topsy Turvy'. This one is a bit different because its leaves are curled and look like they are upside-down! It first appeared in California.

Mixed Plants (Hybrids)

Sometimes, different types of Echeveria plants are crossed to make new ones. These new plants are called hybrids. Here are some hybrids that include Echeveria runyonii:

  • Echeveria 'Domingo' (a mix of E. cante and E. runyonii)
  • Echeveria 'Green Star' (a mix of E. harmsii and E. runyonii 'Topsy Turvy')
  • Echeveria 'Swan Lake' (a mix of E. shaviana and E. runyonii 'Topsy Turvy')
  • Echeveria 'Glade Surprise' (a mix of E. derenbergii and E. runyonii 'Topsy Turvy')
  • Echeveria 'Dagda' (a mix of E. pulvinata 'Frosty' and E. runyonii 'Topsy Turvy')
  • Echeveria 'Exotic' (a mix of E. laui and E. runyonii 'Topsy Turvy')
