Ed Coan's Early Training
When Ed Coan was young, he was a bit skinny. He decided to start working out in his basement to get stronger. He used old exercise machines that worked with cords.
Later, he used a friend's Olympic weightlifting set. He learned how to lift weights from a book by famous bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger. Ed then joined a gym called the Chicago Health Club. After seeing strong lifters there, he started powerlifting with a friend. In just six months, he could squat 500 pounds!
Ed Coan's Powerlifting Career
In 1991, Ed Coan made history. He became the lightest person to lift a total of 2400 pounds. This "total" is the combined weight from three lifts: the squat, bench press, and deadlift.
At the 1998 World Championships, he set an amazing record. He lifted a total of 2463 pounds in his 110 kg weight class. This was an all-time record for powerlifting.
Ed Coan's best total in a drug-tested competition was 2282 pounds. He achieved this in the 100 kg weight class at the 1994 IPF Senior World Championships in South Africa. This was a new world record at that time. Even though he is no longer allowed to compete in the IPF, many still see Ed Coan as a legend in powerlifting. He now spends a lot of time helping young lifters learn the sport.
