Edward "Ed" Coan was born on July 24, 1963. He is an amazing American powerlifter. Many people think he is the greatest powerlifter ever. He won many world championships and set 71 world records! In 2015, he joined the International Sports Hall of Fame.

Ed Coan's Early Life

Ed Coan started out as a very thin kid. Other kids sometimes picked on him at school. This made him want to get stronger. He began working out in his basement. He used old exercise machines there.

Later, he used a friend's Olympic weightlifting set. He learned how to exercise from a book by Arnold Schwarzenegger. This book helped him understand how to build his body.

Starting Powerlifting

Ed Coan joined the Chicago Health Club. There, he saw a famous powerlifter named Bill Kazmaier. This inspired Ed to try powerlifting himself. He started training with a friend.

Within just six months, he could squat 500 pounds (227 kg). This was a huge achievement for someone new to the sport. It showed he had great natural strength.

Ed Coan's Powerlifting Success

In 1991, Ed Coan made history. He became the lightest person to lift a total of 2400 pounds (1089 kg). This "total" is the combined weight from three lifts: the squat, bench press, and deadlift.

In 1998, he set an all-time powerlifting record. He lifted a total of 2463 pounds (1117 kg). This was in the 110 kg weight class. He was incredibly strong!

Drug-Tested Competitions

Ed Coan also set records in drug-tested events. In 1994, he lifted 2282 pounds (1035 kg). This happened at the IPF Senior World Championships in South Africa. It was a new world record at that time.

Even though he faced some challenges later in his career, Ed Coan is still seen as a legend. He spends a lot of time helping young lifters. He teaches them about the sport.
