Education and Art

Ed Vere studied fine art at Camberwell College of Art in London. This is a famous art school. He learned many skills there to become an illustrator.

Illustrator in Residence

In 2020, Ed Vere became the Illustrator in Residence for Booktrust. This means he worked with them to promote drawing. He wanted to show how important drawing is for kids in primary schools. He also hoped to start a discussion about how drawing can help with mental well-being.

Working with Born Free Foundation

In early 2019, Ed Vere traveled to Kenya. He went there to learn about the Born Free Foundation. This group works to protect wild animals. Ed explored, painted, and wrote about their efforts.

Protecting Lions

Ed focused on lions and their homes. He also learned about the people who live near these animals. Born Free works to make sure the world's remaining 20,000 wild lions have a safe future.

Ed and Born Free plan to publish a book together in 2022. There will also be an art exhibition and an auction to raise money. Ed describes the book as a "painted and written travelogue." It will share his journey of discovery. The book aims to help people love nature more. It will talk about freedom for animals and how to protect wildlife. It hopes to inspire people to create a world where animals can thrive. The book is for a wide audience, from 8-year-olds to adults.

Music and Art Concerts

Ed Vere has also worked with music groups. He has created live concerts for schools and families.

Combining Art and Music

He worked with the Britten Sinfonia orchestra. They staged adaptations of his books Mr Big and Max the Brave. These concerts combined live drawing with classical music. One recent show was at The Barbican Centre in London. Hannah Conway helped create and present these unique concerts.

Ed also performed "Mr Big plays Jazz" with the Neil Cowley Trio. These shows took place at Wigmore Hall in London and Birmingham Symphony & Town Halls.

Other Creative Projects

Ed Vere is involved in other exciting projects. He likes to share his knowledge with others.

Teaching Teachers to Draw

He worked with CLPE (Centre for Literacy in Primary Education). Together, they created a program called "Power of Pictures." This is a 12-week course. In it, authors and illustrators teach teachers about writing techniques. This helps teachers inspire their students.

Drawing Videos for Kids

When the coronavirus pandemic started in 2020, many children were learning from home. Ed Vere began making "how to draw" videos. These videos show kids how to draw step-by-step. They are free to use and can be found on his website.
