Who Was Edgar Ende?
Edgar Ende was a talented artist whose paintings explored the world of dreams and imagination. His art style, surrealism, aimed to show things that are beyond what we usually see. He created many interesting and thought-provoking artworks throughout his life.
Early Life and Art
Edgar Ende studied art at the Altona School of Arts and Crafts from 1916 to 1920. This is where he learned many of his painting skills. He got married in 1922, but later divorced. In 1929, he married again. That same year, his son Michael Ende was born. In the 1930s, Edgar Ende's surrealist paintings started to become very popular. Many people noticed and admired his unique style.
Challenges During World War II
During the 1930s, the government in Germany was controlled by the Nazis. They did not like modern art, including Edgar Ende's surrealist paintings. They called his art "degenerate," meaning they thought it was bad or harmful. Starting in 1936, the Nazis told him he was not allowed to paint or show his artwork anymore. This was a very difficult time for him as an artist. In 1940, he was forced to join the German air force, known as the Luftwaffe. He had to operate large guns used to shoot down enemy planes.
Sadly, many of his paintings were destroyed in 1944. This happened during a bomb attack on the city of Munich. Because of this, any of his paintings that survived from before the war are very rare today.
A Recognized Artist
After the war, Edgar Ende continued his artistic journey. In 1951, he met André Breton. Breton was a very important person in the surrealism art movement. He greatly admired Edgar Ende's work. Breton even officially recognized Edgar Ende as a surrealist artist. Edgar Ende kept painting his imaginative and dream-like artworks until he passed away in 1965 from a heart attack.
Influence on His Son's Stories
Edgar Ende's paintings had a big impact on his son, Michael Ende. Michael became a famous writer of children's books. You can see his father's influence in some of Michael's stories. For example, in The Neverending Story, there are scenes that describe strange, dream-like paintings. These are very similar to Edgar Ende's art. Michael Ende even wrote a book called The mirror in the mirror. This book is a collection of short stories that were inspired by Edgar Ende's surrealist paintings. The book even included pictures of his father's artwork alongside the stories.
