Her Start in Photography

Edith's journey into photography began when she took simple pictures around Berwick, Nova Scotia. Her husband worked there as a doctor. She soon joined a group called the Annapolis Valley Pictorialists. This group focused on a style of photography called Pictorialism.

What is Pictorialism?

Pictorialism was a popular photography style. Artists tried to make their photos look like paintings. They often used soft focus and special printing methods. Edith even colored her photographs by hand to make them more artistic.

Showing Her Work

Edith's amazing photos were shown in many places. She exhibited them at the Canadian Salon of Photography. Her pictures also appeared in popular magazines like Maclean's and The Camera. Other magazines like American Photography and Photo-Era also featured her work.

Winning Awards

Edith was very successful in photography contests. She won the famous Kodak Competition not just once, but twice! She won in 1929 and again in 1931. This showed how skilled she was.

Special Recognition

In 1933, Edith received a very important award. She won the Diploma for Exceptional Photographic Art. This was given at a big event called the Century of Progress exhibition in Chicago. It was a huge honor for her artistic photography.

Later Life

In 1947, Edith's health declined due to a stroke. She passed away in 1970 in Berwick, Nova Scotia. Her work continues to inspire photographers today.
