Edith Haworth (1878–1953) was an American painter. She learned art in New York and showed her paintings in big cities like New York City and Detroit, Michigan. She was especially known for her work at the Detroit Institute of Arts. In 1903, she helped start the Detroit Society of Women Painters and was its treasurer.

Learning to Paint

Edith Haworth studied art with famous teachers. One of her teachers was William Merritt Chase. She attended his Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art on Long Island, New York. This school was a great place to learn painting during the summer.

She also studied at the New York School of Art. This school is now called Parsons School of Design. William Merritt Chase started this school in 1896. Edith Haworth also traveled to Europe to learn more about art.

Her Art Career

Edith Haworth was an artist by 1897. She worked at the Detroit School of Art in 1900 and 1904. In 1903, she became a founding member of the Detroit Society of Women Painters. She also served as the treasurer for this group. The society helped women artists learn and find more chances to show their art.

In April 1909, a famous artist named Robert Henri painted a portrait of Edith Haworth. This painting is now kept at the Indiana University Art Museum.

Art Exhibitions

Edith Haworth showed her paintings in many places. In Michigan, she exhibited with the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. She also showed her work with the Detroit Water Color Societies. She displayed her art many times at the Detroit Institute of Arts between 1905 and 1924.

In New York, she exhibited at the MacDowell Club in 1912 and 1914. She also had two watercolor paintings in a very important show called the 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art. These paintings were titled The village band and The birthday party.

She also showed her work at the National Arts Club in 1914. This was an exhibition for artists who used pastels. In 1919, her art was shown at the Powell Galleries. Before 1911, she even exhibited her art in Munich, Germany. She also took part in the Independent Artists Exhibitions.

In February 1931, the Morton Galleries held a special show of her oil paintings. This show looked back at her work since 1905. The next year, in January, her watercolor paintings were shown there too.
